Cloud Computing and Clusters

Updated: Jan 19, 2023

Cluster On Demand (COD) is a cloud computing model that enables users to create clusters of virtual machines (VMs) quickly and easily in the cloud. These VM’s can be used for a variety of purposes, such as running applications, hosting websites, and more.

COD clusters are ephemeral, meaning that they are short-lived and stateless. All data is stored in the cloud and not in the local environment. Ephemeral clusters are ideal for applications that require frequent updates, changes and deployment. It also allows faster turnaround times for development and testing They are also ideal for applications that require high availability and scalability. As all data is stored in the cloud, ephemeral clusters are more secure than traditional clusters, environment, data theft can be avoided. .

Immutable clusters

Immutable clusters are a type of on demand clusters that are designed to remain unchanged once they have been created. This means that no changes can be made to the cluster once it is deployed, any subsequent changes that are made must be done in a new cluster. Immutable clusters are ideal for applications that require elevated levels of consistency and reliability, as all changes must be done in a new cluster. Additionally, immutable clusters are more secure than traditional clusters, as no data is stored in the local environment, data is secured from unauthorized access and stealing.

Where can immutable clusters be useful?

Immutable clusters are particularly useful for applications that require frequent changes and need to be quickly deployed and updated. Additionally, immutable clusters can be used to quickly scale up and down, allowing for better resource allocation and cost savings. They are also ideal for applications that require high availability and scalability, as all data is stored in the cloud and can be quickly deployed.

In conclusion both on demand-clusters and immutable clusters has its’ own place when it comes to high, availability, security reliability and security. It is up to organization which cluster type to use based on needs and objective.
